The International Society for history teaching ( I nternational S ociety for H istory D idactics) is a transnational scientific professional association. It was founded in 1980 on the initiative of Piet FM Fontaine, Walter Fürnrohr and Adriano Gallia. In 2004 the society had 275 members from 42 countries.

Act

In addition to the participation of direct members, who mainly come from the circle of university professors who deal with historical awareness in general and the communication of history in the context of schools and the public, the society has a large number of corporate members, such as historians and history teachers associations and some university and institute libraries.

According to the articles of association, the association intends to promote research and communication in the field of history didactics through the mutual exchange of bibliographies, research results, ideas on the subject, teaching material, curricula and other relevant information. The annual conferences, which are thematically mainly aimed at getting to know and analyze the respective national handling of history and the characteristics of historical awareness in politics, media and society, should also contribute to the exchange. In addition, topics such as history teacher training, curriculum development or school media are in the foreground, which are compared and evaluated in the context of the discussions.

Up to the year 2000 the society published two editions of the trilingual "Mitteilungen". The “Yearbook / Jahrbuch / Annales” has been published annually since 2001 and was published between 2001 and 2003 by Karl Filser, Raf de Keyser, Henri Moniot and Karl Pellens . The “yearbook” has been published by Wochenschau-Verlag since 2004 and Susanne Popp has been the editor in charge since 2005 .
