International Saarland Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Saarland Cup was a soccer cup competition organized by 1. FC Saarbrücken and held in the 1949/50 and 1950/51 seasons.

After 1. FC Saarbrücken played out of competition in the Second French Division in the 1948/49 season, and even won the unofficial championship here, the club was refused a repeated admission for the 1949/50 season. Since the first team of the club did not want to participate in the weak honor league Saarland , the International Saar Cup was launched.

In the competition for the cup and the prize money of two million Saar francs , 1. FC Saarbrücken initially played at home against 15 Western European and South American teams. The three teams that achieved the best result against the hosts were invited to the final tournament, which consisted of the semi-finals, the third place match and the final. 1. FC Saarbrücken finally won the 1st International Saarland Cup with a 4-0 final against Stade Rennais UC .

In the 1950/51 season, VfB Neunkirchen was the second host team to take part in the competition. The qualifying matches were played back and forth. After the inclusion of Saarland football in the German league structure for the 1951/52 season was certain, interest in the International Saarland Cup flattened. The competition was not completed.
