The International Bible Quiz ( Hebrew חידון התנ"ך Chidon HaTanach ) is a global Tanakh - competition for high school students, who every year on Yom Ha'atzmaut independence) (day in Jerusalem in Israel takes place. Over the years the competition has undergone various modifications in terms of participation (young people, adults, national, international, etc.).
The competition was founded by Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion , and the first Bible competition took place in 1958 to mark the tenth anniversary of Israel's independence . As the event is officially sponsored by the Israeli government, it is usually attended by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education .
The winner of the International Bible Contest will win a four-year college scholarship at Bar Ilan University in Tel Aviv , while the runner-up and winner of the Diaspora contest will win a scholarship to the Mechon Lev (i.e. Jerusalem College of Technology ). Since it is usually won by Israelis, there is a separate diaspora competition for the best non-Israelis. The week before and after the competition, participants have a set program known as the Bible Camp (or Tanach Camp). During the Bible Camp , participants travel all over Israel, meeting dignitaries, visiting different sites, participating in various Gadna programs (Hebrew גדנ"ע, i.e. (para) military programs for youth), and of course studying the Tanakh .
The international quiz is organized by the Education and Youth Corps (Hel HaHinuh VeHaNo'ar) of the Israeli army , in cooperation with the Ministry of Education , the Jewish Agency , the Jewish National Fund , the World Zionist Organization and other organizations. Judges and members of the Presidium are appointed to represent these organizations.
The quiz will be broadcast live on the country's first television program .
In addition to the large international competition in Israel, there are also many national competitions, such as B. in the United States or Australia .
The first winner of the competition in 1958 was Amos Hakham (1921–2012).
The Bible quiz also became a subject of satire . In its former format as an international adult competition, it inspired Arik Einstein and Uri Zohar to write a famous sketch that aired in entertainment in the early 1970s.
In 2010, Avner Netanyahu, the youngest son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu , took 3rd place in the competition.
