Intisar el-Zein Soughayroun
Intisar el-Zein Soughayroun (also: Intsar, al-Zein, el-Zein, Sghairyoun, Segayron; Arabic انتصار الزين صغيرون; * March 13, 1958 in Khartoum North ) is a Sudanese professor of archeology at the University of Khartoum . In early September 2019, Soughayroun was appointed Minister for Higher Education in the Transitional Cabinet of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok during Sudan's transition to democracy .
Life
Origin and education
Entisar was born in Khartoum North in 1958 into a family of educated men and women. Her father Alzain Seghairoon is a former minister of irrigation, and her maternal grandfather Abelrahman Ali Taha was the first education minister of independent Sudan. Her aunt Fadwa Abdelrahman Ali Taha is a university professor.
In 1982 she graduated with honors from the Philosophical Faculty of Khartoum University, specializing in archeology. She received an MA in Archeology from the American University in Cairo in 1987 and a PhD in the same discipline from the University of Khartoum in 2002. For most of her professional career she worked in the archaeological department of the university.
Archaeological research
Soughayroun is Professor of Archeology at the University of Khartoum and works continuously with the University of Bergen in Norway. Her research interests are in Islamic archeology in Sudan.
Their excavations led to important finds from the ancient Kerma and Meroe cultures as well as to artifacts from the post-Islamic era. More than thirty archaeological sites in the country can be traced back to her work, which earned her high recognition in scientific circles and is also seen as an economic factor for the country.
2018–2019 Sudanese protests
Soughayroun took part in the Sudanese protests in 2018-2019 . One of her nephews was killed in the June 3, 2019 massacre in Khartoum . In early July 2019, based on previous experience, she expressed skepticism about the negotiations with the Transitional Military Council (TMC) and supported the continued civil disobedience . She believed that the TMC was losing power.
Political career
In early September 2019, Soughayroun was appointed Minister for Higher Education of Sudan (or Head of the Council for Higher Education and Scientific Research) in the interim cabinet of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok during the Sudanese democratization process. Other female leaders in Sudan during the transition period include Chief Justice Nemat Abdullah Khair and members of the Sovereignty Council Aisha Musa el-Said and Raja Nicola .
