David Stevens

David Stevens (born December 22, 1940 in Tiberias , Palastinä , † July 17, 2018 in Whangarei , New Zealand ) was an Australian screenwriter and film director .

Life

Stevens grew up in Tiberia. His father was an aircraft engineer for flying boats there . In 1960 he left Israel to emigrate to Australia, but ended up in New Zealand , where he stayed until the 1970s and worked for radio and television.

In Australia, he wrote the screenplay for the war drama The Fall of Lieutnant Morant (1980), based on a play by Kenneth G. Ross, with director Bruce Beresford and Jonathan Hardy . The script was nominated for an Oscar .

He directed the miniseries A Town Like Alice (1981). He also wrote three novels. Among other things, he also finished Queen: The Story of an American Family and Mama Flora's Family , which were originally written by Alex Haley and ended by Stevens after his death. Both novels were also made into films. For this he received the Image Award from the NAACP .
