The inventory of the intangible cultural heritage of North Rhine-Westphalia is a directory of intangible cultural expressions in North Rhine-Westphalia that are eligible as candidates for the intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO .

In the inventory of the intangible cultural heritage of North Rhine-Westphalia , based on a resolution of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia of September 17, 2013, on the recommendation of a state jury for the intangible cultural heritage, those living traditions that have a special relationship to North Rhine-Westphalia and which meet the requirements of the nationwide uniform catalog of criteria. In a total of seven criteria, this refers in particular to the demand for vitality and dynamic further development of the intangible cultural heritage. Customs, knowledge and skills, which the bearers of cultural techniques see as part of their cultural heritage, must therefore be practiced in the present and continuously redesigned.

Carriers of cultural techniques from North Rhine-Westphalia could apply for inclusion in the state inventory within the framework of a call for tenders. The state jury, which also includes Eva-Maria Seng , Chair for Material and Intangible Cultural Heritage at the University of Paderborn, made recommendations to the responsible NRW Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture from the large number of suggestions received and sports.

Entries

On June 30, 2014, the four following living traditions were included in the state inventory for the first time by handing over a certificate from the Minister for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Ute Schäfer :

On October 29, 2016, the Bochum May Evening Festival was awarded a certificate to the Bochumer May Evening Society 1388 eV.

In April 2018, five more traditions from different regions were selected and entered in the national inventory of intangible cultural heritage:

  • Martin tradition: The Martin tradition is about customs with a lantern parade, Martinsongs, Martinsfeuer, representation of the coat scene, distribution of sweets to children and the moral message of charity.
  • Planting and maintaining wattle hedges: The weaving and maintenance of living fences for agricultural and forestry purposes as well as the special technique of knotting are part of the laying out and maintenance of wattle hedges.
  • Soccer field culture : A youth culture form of social self-organization that originated in the urban milieus of the 1920s.
  • Carrier pigeon : It includes the keeping and breeding of carrier pigeons as well as competitions with regard to distance flight and beauty.
  • Haubergswirtschaft in Siegerland and neighboring regions: a sustainable, communal form of forest management that has been practiced in Siegerland for centuries.

So far, four of these entries have been included in the nationwide register of intangible cultural heritage , namely the Rhenish Carnival, river fishing at the mouth of the Sieg, the Osterräderlauf of Lügde and the Haubergswirtschaft in Siegerland.
