Ioan al IV-lea Potcoavă († January 1, 1578 in Poland ), also called Ioan Sarpega , Iwan Pidkowa (ukr.) Or horseshoe , was Prince of Moldova from November to December 1577 .

On his mother's side, Potcoavă was the half-brother of Ioan Voda cel Viteaz (Prince John the Brave) and led the Cossacks of Praguri . Even then he was highly regarded in neighboring countries because of his courage. He came to power through the disempowerment of the Moldovan ruler Petru Schiopul ("the lame") . Potcoavă was able to rely on the local boyars , but the Sublime Porte refused to recognize him. When the rulers of Poland and Wallachia were incited against Potcoavă by the Turks , they overthrew him in December 1577. On January 1, 1578, he was beheaded in Poland.
