Ioannis Papaspyrou

Ioannis Papaspyrou ( Greek Γιάννης Παπασπύρου , * 1922 in Piraeus ; † July 5, 2010 ) was a Greek politician of the Panellinio Sosialistiko Kinima (PASOK) and mayor of Piraeus.

biography

After attending school and studying, he worked as an economist .

In 1959 he was elected Vice Mayor of Piraeus and was also an advisor to the city administration. In 1964 he was elected member of the Greek Parliament for the first time (Gr. Vouli ton Ellinon Βουλή των Ελλήνων) and was there representative of the interests of the prefecture of Piraeus .

After the beginning of the military dictatorship under Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos , he took part in the protest movements against the colonel's regime alongside Andreas Papandreou and was therefore arrested and tortured. When he was arrested in 1967 and 1968, he was exiled to the Cycladic island of Folegandros , the Dodecanese island of Tilos and interned in the Makrakomis camp. In the meantime he was a member of the executive board of the Panhellenic Liberation Movement (PAK) founded by Papandreou .

After the end of the military dictatorship, on September 3, 1974, he was one of the founding members of the All-Greek Socialist Movement ( Panellinio Sosialistiko Kinima , PASOK) alongside Papandreou . In the parliamentary elections in Greece on November 17, 1974 , he was again elected member of parliament and, as a representative of the prefecture of Piraeus, belonged to the twelve-member first parliamentary group of PASOK. In the elections of November 20, 1977 he was re-elected and was also a member of the executive board of the PASOK parliamentary group, which now consists of 92 members. Between 1974 and 1981 he was also a member of the parliamentary committees on finance and coordination, industry, health and shipping.

After he was re-elected as a member of parliament on October 18, 1981, he was appointed Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Commerce in the 1st government of Prime Minister Papandreou .

In the local elections in 1982 he was elected mayor (gr. Dimarchos δήμαρχος) of Piraeus and held this office between January 1, 1983 and December 31, 1986.

In the elections of May and November 1989 and 1993 Papaspyrou was re-elected as a PASOK candidate for member of the Greek Parliament and last represented the interests of the voters in the Piraeus prefecture until the 1996 parliamentary elections.
