Iowa Writers' Workshop

The Iowa Writers' Workshop , officially the Program in Creative Writing , is a prestigious creative writing program at the University of Iowa .

The current director is Lan Samantha Chang .

The course began in 1936 with the gathering of poets and prose writers under the direction of Wilbur Schramm . Graduates receive a Master of Fine Arts .

Iowa Writers' Workshop graduates have won numerous Pulitzer and National Book Awards, as well as other major literary awards. In 2003 the workshop was the first institution to receive the National Humanities Medal from the National Endowment for the Humanities .
