Louise Elisabeth Glück (also Gluck ; born April 22, 1943 in New York City ) is an American poet and essayist .

life and work

Louise Glück grew up on Long Island . She studied at Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University , including with Stanley Kunitz . After the release of her first poetry book First Born in 1968, she suffered from a writer's block , they only overcame when she in 1971 a lecturer at Goddard College ( Vermont accepted). She then held a professorship at Williams College for 20 years . From 1999 to 2003 she was Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets . Glück Rosenkranz has been Writer in Residence and Professor of English at Yale University since 2004 .

A main focus of the complex structured poems with pulsating verses, written in the free rhythm of a naturally flowing language, is the confrontation of humans with the imponderables of nature.
