The Kia Picanto , also called Kia Morning ( Hangeul : 기아 모닝), is a five-door, four-seater (five-seater in the import version ) small car with hatchbacks from the South Korean automaker KIA Motors .

The introduction in Germany took place in April 2004. The model name in Korea is Morning (der Morgen). There are two equipment variants available: the LX and the better equipped EX variant. According to the manufacturer, the vehicle has the largest interior space in its class. In Germany with two different engines to choose from: a gasoline and a diesel engine . In December 2007 it received a facelift. With this, the diesel variant also disappeared from the range.

description

The vehicle won numerous comparison tests against direct competitors, such as the Fiat Panda . But it also won a test by Auto Bild against slightly larger cars, such as the VW Polo . In all tests, the brakes, chassis, workmanship, material and the space (also in the rear) were highly praised, but the trunk size with only 105/127 liters was not applauded. The ADAC concluded its test with the words: "absolutely recommendable". A Volkswagen Fox with almost the same equipment , but only available as a three-door model, cost around € 3,500 more than a Picanto EX at the list price. Therefore the Picanto was often referred to as a price breaker. KIA's aggressive pricing is apparently due to the fact that an increase in market share is sought in Germany. As a rule, the customer at KIA often pays significantly less than the list price.

history

The predecessor of the KIA Picanto was the KIA Pride (1989 to 2000). In contrast to the Pride, the Picanto is not available in a combination version . For the introduction in Germany, which took place at the same time as the first movie of the cartoon character Garfield , some demonstration cars were provided with large-format stickers from Garfield; three of them were raffled by FOX in Germany. KIA also offered this sticker set for retrofitting to private customers at a price of € 200 (including attachment).

design

In the development center in Rüsselsheim, the body shape (the chief designer in Korea was Kang Lee) was co-developed in order to better adapt it to European tastes. The chassis was also fine-tuned to meet the needs of the local market and buyers. Rüsselsheim developed the three-cylinder diesel engine independently in the "Diesel Competence Center".

The design is based on contemporary European small cars and differs from its competitors largely only on the sidelines.

  • At the front, the oversized, recessed clear-glass headlights with integrated indicators and the oval, slightly protruding radiator grille integrated in the bumper are striking. These attributes give the vehicle the typical "child face" of this class. In this it is similar to the Citroën C2 or the Ford Fiesta .
  • The sideline is drawn up quite far and ends at the rear with a "hip swing", as was last common in the 1960s, but is also used again by automobile designers in the early 21st century. The Picanto shares this characteristic with the BMW X3 and the Hyundai Santa Fe .
  • The slightly sloping rear end with the extremely short wheel overhang, the large clear glass lighting units and the rear window with a black background can also be found in a similar form on the Citroën C2 or the Chevrolet Kalos .

Model maintenance

  • January 2008

With this facelift, the car received teardrop-shaped headlights, which the Suzuki Alto and Opel Agila got at the same time after they appeared in 2003 with the Nissan Micra . The taillights were also given shaped rings, where previously smooth lines ran. This is what the center console now shows, whose smoother shape looks tidier. In the process, however, two shelves disappeared, a larger one under the radio, which is now twice as high, and one to the left of the steering wheel by attaching the headlight range control there.

The radiator grille has become smaller, honeycomb-shaped and chrome-streaked in the top equipment. Behind it, the diesel worked in only a few countries, but it found its way to Germany via re-imports. Otherwise the unchanged petrol engines were to be found. The cool top equipment can be recognized by the indicators in the side mirrors.

On the security side, there was a relevant addition: the ESP that has become available . It had to be ordered in every configuration, the basic version was not available: Picanto Attract like three quarters of the small cars from 2010 do not have an ESP. This is probably one of the reasons why the ESP became compulsory for newly introduced models throughout the EU in November 2011 . The Attract also lacks rear disc brakes , because these were only installed with the ESP. A comparison test of the respective braking distances did not take place, but drum brakes do not necessarily extend this. In addition, the Attract is the only German equipment in the history of the model that does not contain side airbags. Its price was the same as the entry-level LX from 2004: 8,700 euros.

On the comfort side, there was a USB connection in the vehicle, at least in the top equipment cool (→ equipment ). The radio has played MP3 CDs since 2004, and in 2005 it became standard. The navigation system was now portable and no longer came from Becker, but from Clarion . Vehicles equipped with it are rare, as is the purely visual sports package. Outside it darkened front lights and aprons, inside indicated tubes in aluminum optics framed the instruments. The pedals are made of real aluminum.

Electric servo assistance was now used for steering . The electric motor only supports actual steering maneuvers, while a hydraulic one builds up oil pressure for any steering maneuvers. The ADAC rates the new steering better than the hydraulic one (rating 3.1 to 3.7). The electronics can build up an artificial steering resistance that provides more stability at high speeds. The steering wheel received the cee'd design, but its leather cover was criticized for its low slip resistance. This is where the Attract has an advantage.

  • June 2009

This facelift was initially reserved for South Korea and Vietnam, in the following summer of 2010 it reached Europe and in November Germany. Primarily it made the optics more dynamic, in the details it increased the comfort: for the first time a reversing camera (display in the inside mirror) and an automatic climate control were available. Black and silver rims, vertical fog lights, darkened lights and an implied “tiger nose” were the external features of the top equipment, to which a flip key now provided access. Inside, a full leather interior was available in black or cream color. Another innovation came as standard and was the only one to be exported straight away: the steering wheel in the look of the Soul . This facelift can be found using the new Vision and Spirit equipment , which replaced the earlier ones.

For the 2011 model year, the ESP became standard in Germany and the petrol engine reached Euro 5. Except for leather upholstery and a reversing camera, all elements of the 2009 facelift were now available in Europe , for example in the German top line Spirit , in which only the dark lights and two-tone rims were optional .

Crash test

The Picanto from the year of construction 2004 achieved only three stars (out of five possible) for the occupant safety in the EuroNCAP crash test 11/2004 (likewise the above mentioned Fiat Panda). The child protection result was better with four out of five stars.

reliability

In a survey of 67,000 vehicles in 2010, readers of “ Which? Car “made the Picanto of the years 2007 to 2009 the most reliable model. The consumer organization reserved the results of older years of construction for the print edition. Questions were asked about breakdowns, errors and unpleasant but inconsequential properties such as squeaking noises.

JD Power surveys on the years of construction 2006 to 2011 show a constant reliability of the mechanics that is customary in this segment. The interior changed from below to above average, the body and paintwork were consistently the best in the segment. In the 2012 survey, the mechanics also received top marks. One to three year old vehicles were rated by 17,000 British car owners.

This is confirmed by the DEKRA used car report. Its advantage lies in statements about long-term durability. He does not divide this into years of construction, but mileage. In the class from 100,000 km, the body, frame and interior defects rate is only a fifth of the other small cars. The drive and exhaust problems are 40% less common than usual for this class. The Picanto deviates upwards in terms of braking performance. Here, the saddles and discs are worn 30% more often than in other small cars. The use of the motorway, which is unusual in this segment, could contribute to this. The electrical and lighting defects are most common from 100,000 km. Every second vehicle has it, the Picanto with 54% a little more often than the 48% usual in its class. In the three deficiency categories (none, minor, significant) it shows slightly better results than the other small cars.

In terms of overall satisfaction, the ADAC 2012 determined a result slightly above the class average. Here the question was not explicitly about the reliability, but about the general feeling of owners born in 2008 to 2010, from comfort to economy. All the small cars were ranked between 50 and 70 on a scale of 100.

The following defects are typical of vehicles:

ABS rings (before 2006)

Occasionally there were cracked ABS rings . These gears rotate with the wheel axles. Their alternation between deepening and increasing enables inductive speed determination. A cracked ring leads to different results on the same axis. The ABS suspects it is slipping and begins to regulate - apparently for no reason. Due to the small difference in speed, the ABS noise also sounds unusual; it is usually audible when braking gently at around 20 km / h. If the differences are implausibly large, the ABS warning light appears. The problem is based on corrosion. It leads to slight expansion of the rings and overloads them.

Engines

Up until autumn 2006, the drives contained components that were too soft or installed in the wrong dimension, which led to problems in some vehicles.

  • Otto engines (until autumn 2006)

The toothed belt spur gear can get a little play in certain specimens. The consequences are poor starting, irregular idling and loss of performance. As a result, the components wear out prematurely, and in rare individual cases engine damage is reported. The chassis number range from KNEBA243 # 4T000001 to KNEBA243 # 5T168738 (produced until autumn 2006) is affected. The problem can be recognized by a black instead of silver fastening screw on the spur gear of the crankshaft. It is 5 mm too short, so that the thread may have been damaged in the factory by the intended tightening force. As a result, it does not grip sufficiently, the spur gear can move easily and no longer guide the toothed belt precisely. As a result, the revolutions of the crankshaft no longer match those of the camshaft . The fastening screw is best seen from the wheel arch on the passenger side. The drive belt for the various units is located on the side. The defect was usually eliminated automatically during an inspection by replacing the screw and noted in the manufacturer's service booklet and guarantee system. The error is usually noticed within the first 50,000 km of mileage. In the case of short-haul use, however, this is only achieved long after the three-year guarantee period at that time. Nevertheless, the manufacturer is accommodating in terms of the cost sharing. If you do not change the screws with the above audible problems, the gear wheel and crankshaft will have more play.

  • Diesel engines (before 2007)

Until the end of 2006, the 1.1L three-cylinder contained materials in the transmission that led to its premature wear ( details ). There are no problem reports for vehicles with the new transmission.

rust

Drivers report four rust-prone areas. The affected parts were exchanged by KIA on request, even with purely cosmetic flash rust. However, since there was no recall for three of the locations, there may still be vehicles with these rust spots. A corresponding examination is worthwhile here. As with all manufacturers, the contractually guaranteed six-year rust perforation guarantee only covers very few cases.

The Swedish material research institute swerea KIMAB checked the joints on the 30 best-selling vehicles in Scandinavia from model years 2004 and 2005. It placed the Picanto in the bottom group. The condition was checked after three years of normal use. The only small car besides the Picanto was the Nissan Micra with a very good result for the K12, launched in 2003 . Its predecessor, the K11 , achieved an average result. Statistics on later years of construction are not public, but complaints from drivers can only be found for the construction period before summer 2007. This is in line with the statistics , they rate the body from 2006 onwards as very good.

  • Cross member

Before 2006, the upper crossbeam between the engine compartment and the ventilation inlet below the rubber seal often rusted. When checking, caution is advised as the sheet metal used is sharp-edged. Apparently it was not deburred before installation, which means that the paint does not adhere optimally. In the surrounding rubber seal, the water accumulates in the now unpainted area, which forms rust after a very short time. The component was exchanged under the guarantee.

  • Seat screws

By summer 2007, rust-prone screws were installed in the guide rails of the seats. This was permanently remedied by replacing the later, more rust-resistant ones, including the guide rails if necessary. Alternatively, sealing after removing the rust would be possible.

  • Lever for opening the tank cap

Until the summer of 2007, the lever next to the driver's seat, which opens the fuel filler cap, also tended to rust. The purely cosmetic deficiency was remedied by replacing it, but since the material remained the same, sanding and painting with anti-rust paint is possible as an alternative.

  • Rear seat backs

Up to the summer of 2006 there was a slight rust film on the rear seat backrests. It is only visible when you open the zips of the (removable) covers. A harmless defect that you should discuss with your car dealership to eliminate.

Tank filler neck

If the spray mist was very salty, a seal at the tank inlet could become brittle and fuel could escape. The problem was resolved by a recall in 2010, affecting Picantos built between October 13, 2009 and February 8, 2010. The action was noted in the KIA's service book and electronic guarantee system.

Faded manhole strips (before 2005)

On models built up to the end of 2004, the black rubber strips below the side windows may gray and become stained. This is a defect that is usually remedied on a guarantee basis. Later models received a softer, weather-resistant material.

Immobilizer (before 2007)

Some Picanto only started after several attempts to start. Here the antenna of the immobilizer was defective. It receives the vehicle-specific code from the ignition key and then enables the ignition and fuel supply. The antenna is installed in a ring around the ignition lock and was supplied by Bosch as part of the engine management system.

Screeching

At extremely low temperatures (below minus 10 degrees) a screeching can be heard from the engine compartment when starting the engine. The noise disappears after a few seconds. The cause may be the starter. The vehicle was supposed to spend a night there in severe frost for inspection by the dealership.

Squeak (before 2005)

A squeak on the rear axle could be heard after many a parked, damp and cold night. This squeaking usually disappears after the first light braking. KIA is aware of the error; the workshops replace the rear brake pads, which have swelled up slightly due to the moisture, free of charge.

Group relationships

The Hyundai Getz of the parent company Hyundai shares numerous technical details with the Picanto. So the gasoline engines come from the Hyundai shelf, the diesel engine, however, found the opposite way: from KIA to Hyundai.

Gas drive

The 1.1 liter gasoline engine can be converted to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The gas tank is located in the spare wheel recess, the gas tank nozzle fits right next to the fuel tank nozzle under the tank cap and is therefore not visible from the outside. Equipment (Germany)

The differences are many and always depend on which country the Picanto was imported from.
