James Tate (poet)
James Vincent Tate (born December 8, 1943 in Kansas City , Missouri , † July 8, 2015 in Springfield , Massachusetts ) was an American poet and university professor .
Life
Tate grew up as a half-orphan , because his father was shot down as a pilot before he was born during the Second World War in 1943 in an aerial battle over Germany . After attending school, he studied at Kansas State College in Pittsburg , graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He completed a subsequent postgraduate course at the University of Iowa in 1967 with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) .
In 1967 he made his debut as a poet with the volume of poetry The Lost Pilot , in which he dealt with the loss of his father. After receiving a Guggenheim grant , the two volumes The Oblivion Ha-Ha (1970) and Hints to Pilgrims (1971) were published.
Tate, who has held a professorship at the University of Massachusetts since 1971 , was also a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley , Columbia University and Emerson College .
The volumes of poetry Absences (1972), Viper Jazz (1976), Riven Doggeries (1979), Constant Defender (1983), Reckoner (1986), Distance From Loved Ones (1990) and Selected Poems (1991) were published for the he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1992 . In 1994 he received the National Book Award in the poetry category for the ensuing collection of poetry, Worshipful Company of Fletchers (1993) .
Tate, who was also a member of the Poetry Society of America , last published the volume of poetry Shroud of the Gnome in 1997 . In 2004 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
