Ipikil is a place on the island of Tanna in the province of Tafea in the island state of Vanuatu .

geography

The place is located on the east coast of the island of Tanna, together with Lamakara on Sulfur Bay and below the active volcano Mount Yasur in the south. For a long time the place was a center of the John Frum movement . However, in April 2000, a natural disaster occurred when one side of Lac Siwi (Lake Isiwi) broke and a tidal wave swept through the valley and destroyed the village. However, no human life was harmed because the villagers were able to get to safety on the rock on the alarm bell of the nearby church. Thousands of residents in the area officially converted to Christianity in 2006.
