geology

The main crater Vulki Mulki has a diameter of approx. 300 m and a depth of approx. 150 m, in it there are five vents .

Volcanic activity

Mount Yasur eruptions

The Yasur has been continuously active for at least 800 years.

In August 1774 , after seeing a red glow in the clouds at night , James Cook landed in a bay east of the volcano. An intended ascent of the volcano was prevented by residents due to a taboo : The residents of the surrounding villages believe that the volcano is the place where the souls of people remain after death.

The normal activity of the Yasur consists of Strombolian and moderate Vulcanian eruptions. The southern chimney, which is directly adjacent to the visitor area, is currently the most active. On average, explosions occur every 3 minutes.

The last time that increased activity was registered by the volcano was in autumn 2002. Later, however , the number of eruptions dropped back to the normal around 500 per day.

In May 2010, particularly strong strombolian explosions caused lumps of lava to fly to the outer flank of the volcano, so that the ascent to the crater had to be temporarily blocked.

monitoring

A seismic station was set up in October 1992 .

At just 361 meters high, Yasur is probably the most easily accessible active volcano on earth. The walk from the nearest resort to the summit usually takes less than an hour. With an off-road vehicle you can drive on a steep slope up to approx. 200 m to the crater rim.

Arrived at the crater rim, visitors can enjoy an impressive spectacle, especially at night, when the volcano pours out clouds of ash and lava fountains every few minutes amid a thunderous roll of thunder. Since lava bombs can hit the visitor area even during normal activity , maximum attention is required.

The volcano may only be climbed with a local guide. In addition, a fee must be paid at a control station at the beginning of the driveway. a. serves to maintain the volcanic area.

Since 2005 there has been a volcano post box below the crater, which is unique in the world.

In 2013, Klaas Heufer-Umlauf threw a ring into the volcano's crater as part of the ProSieben show “ Joko versus Klaas - The Duel Around the World ”.
