The northeast side of the Ipsarion: Dense forests under steep cliffs |
The Ipsarion or Ypsario (Greek: Υψαριο ), also Psario ( Ψαριό ) is at 1206 meters the highest mountain on the Greek island of Thasos .
topography
The mountain is located in the northeast of the island and is the prominent point of a pronounced mountain ridge that runs through the entire island and here runs in a northwest-southeast direction. The Ipsarion ridge is characterized by clear layers . Layers of gneiss lie over those made of marble , in the area of which karst phenomena can be found. To the northeast it slopes down on its front side with rugged rock walls to the village of Potamia . The south-west facing back is much flatter.
Climate and vegetation
Due to the altitude, there is not a Mediterranean , but more humid, more moderate climate, the ridge leads to accumulated precipitation, which can fall in the form of up to 50 cm of snow in winter and ensure high precipitation values on the entire island. The vegetation is characterized on the south side up to the summit region by light forest and meadows. On the northeast side you will find dense forests below the rock walls and scree slopes, which thrive here due to the particularly humid climate and numerous springs. Extensive olive groves can be found below about 250 meters .
Development
At the summit of the Ipsarion there is a radar system of the Greek army, but it was never completed due to protests from local residents. A summit book is available at the summit ; an ascent of the mountain via hiking trails from Potamia takes about four hours. On the southwest side of the Ipsarion there is also a road that can only be used with off-road vehicles. At the foot of the mountain, where the hiking trail starts in the village of Potamia, there are two water sources for hikers.
