Henri Frankfort during excavations in the Diyala area

The Iraq Expedition was a series of seven annual archaeological excavation campaigns carried out in Iraq by scientists from the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago between November 1930 and April 1937 . The excavations were led by Henri Frankfort , other employees included Thorkild Jacobsen , Seton Lloyd and Pinhas Delougaz. The excavations took place simultaneously at several sites on the lower reaches of the Diyala River northeast of Baghdad . Were investigated Tell Asmar (ancient Eshnunna ) Khafajah (ancient Tutub) Tell Iščāli (ancient Neribtum ) and Tell Aqrab whose ancient name is not known. Frankfort also carried out excavations in the Neo-Assyrian residence town of Dūr-Šarrukēn until 1935 .

The excavation results were published in a series of publications by the Oriental Institute between 1939 and 1990. They presented architecture, sculptures, reliefs, ceramics and cylinder seals from the various sites. The results from Tell Asmar, Ḫafāǧī and Tell Agrab formed the framework for the definition of the early dynastic period in Mesopotamia and its division into three periods.

Starting in 2003, the Oriental Institute has processed previously unpublished research data from the Iraq Expedition from the excavations in the Diyala area in its own project.
