Seton Lloyd

Seton Howard Frederick Lloyd (born May 30, 1902 in Birmingham , † January 7, 1996 in Faringdon , Oxfordshire) was a British archaeologist from the Near East .

Lloyd attended the Uppingham School and then studied architecture at the Architectural Association in London until he graduated in 1926. He made his first archaeological experience during the excavations of Tell el-Amarna under Henri Frankfort . From 1930 to 1937 he worked under his direction on excavations as part of the Iraq Expedition in the Diyala area. From 1937 to 1939 he carried out excavations in Mersin with John Garstang . From 1939 he worked for the Iraqi Antiquities Authority in Baghdad . He carried out several large excavation projects there, including a. Tell Uqair , Eridu , Tell Asmar and Ḫorsabad . In 1948 he became director of the British Institute of Archeology in Ankara , which he headed until 1961. In Turkey he participated in excavations in Beycesultan , Polatlı , Harran and Sultantepe . There were also surveys, especially in Jebel Sinjar . From 1962 to 1969 he was Professor of Near Eastern Archeology at the Institute of Archeology at the University of London . In 1955 he was elected a member of the British Academy .
