Irena Kwiatkowska (born September 17, 1912 in Warsaw , † March 3, 2011 in Konstancin-Jeziorna ) was a Polish actress .

Life

Irena Kwiatkowska finished her acting training in 1935 at the State Drama School in Warsaw. She then made her debut at the Warsaw Theater Cyrulik Warszawski . Until the outbreak of World War II , she was a member of the ensemble at the Powszechny theaters in Warsaw, Teatr Nowy Posen and Teatr Polski in Katowice .

During the war Kwiatkowska was a member of the Polish Home Army and fought in the Warsaw Uprising .

After the war, Irena Kwiatkowska joined the Cracow cabaret Seven Cats . From October 1959 to July 1966 she appeared in the most successful program of the early years of Polish television, the " Cabaret of the Older Men " ( Cabaret Starszych Panów ) - mostly as the spirited Countess Tyłbaczewska. In addition to her theatrical work on the Warsaw stages and in cabaret, she achieved her greatest popularity as a working woman in the television series 40-latek (The Forty Years Old ) by director Jerzy Gruza in the 1970s. As a working woman, she was featured in a different profession in each part of the series. The series is still regularly repeated today on Polish television and made Irena Kwiatkowska a legend.

At the turn of the millennium, the weekly magazine Polityka conducted a survey of the most important Polish actors of the past century. Irena Kwiatkowska came in 5th place in this survey.

At the children's request, she received the international award as Cavalier of the Order of Smiles .

Irena Kwiatkowska was married to Bolesław Kielski (1915-1993). He suffered severe head injuries from falling on concrete while leaving the house and then suffered from progressive paralysis. In recent years Kielski could only lie down and no longer speak. His wife looked after him until his death.

Irena Kwiatkowska-Kielska died at the age of 98 and was buried next to her husband on the Cmentarz Powązkowski in Warsaw.
