Jerzy Gruza (born April 4, 1932 in Warsaw , † February 16, 2020 in Pruszków ) was a Polish director and screenwriter .

Life

Jerzy Gruza started his career in 1955 at the Polish State Television TVP in entertainment programming. He created his first shows together with Jacek Fedorowicz and Bogumił Kobiela in the 1960s. In 1965 the popular comedy series Wojna domowa was created . The success of this series was surpassed in the 1970s by the series Czterdziestolatek (German The Forty Years). The series with actors such as Andrzej Kopiczyński , Anna Seniuk and Irena Kwiatkowska in the lead roles has cult status in Poland to this day. From 1974 to 1977, 21 episodes of the comedic, satirical family series were created, which showed the life and crises of a 40-year-old construction manager and his family in Warsaw at the time of the building boom of the Edward Gierek era . Gruza directed and wrote the scripts for this series with Krzysztof Teodor Toeplitz . In addition to these two series, he created numerous television theater productions. With Jerzy Skolimowski he wrote the script for his film Deep End .

In 1983 he became the theater director of the Teatr Muzyczny in Gdynia . From this operetta stage he developed the first musical theater in Poland. Musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar and Les Misérables were premiered in Poland under his management and direction . He remained the director of this theater until 1991. In 1993 he continued his successful series Czterdziestolatek - 20 years later . He also shot cinema comedies, which, however, could not build on the success of the television series.
