Irene Fernandez

Irene Fernandez (born April 18, 1946 in Malaysia , † March 31, 2014 in Serdang , Malaysia) was co-founder and director of the non-governmental organization Tenaganita in Malaysia. This organization campaigns for the rights of guest workers. Irene Fernandez, who also co-founded the human rights group SUARAM (“Voice of the Malaysian People”) and the Asian Forum on Women, Law and Development, was vice-chairwoman of the women's wing of the opposition party “ Parti Keadilan Rakyat ” (People's Justice Party ) until her death .

Awards and honors

  • 2005: Right Livelihood Award for their work against violence against women and the exploitation of migrant workers in Malaysia
