Irene Forstner-Müller

Irene Forstner-Müller (* 1968 in Linz ) is an Austrian Egyptologist . She heads the Cairo branch of the Austrian Archaeological Institute .

Irene Forstner-Müller studied Egyptology, Classical Archeology and Field Archeology at the University of Vienna . From 1999 to 2002 she was a research assistant for the SCIEM 2000 project and in 2001/02 she was an assistant at the Institute for Egyptology at the University of Vienna. There she received her doctorate in 2002 with the work The Graves of Area A / II of Tell el-Dab'a . She then became a research assistant and deputy to the director Manfred Bietak at the Cairo branch of the Austrian Archaeological Institute. In October 2009 she succeeded Bietak's first female head of the branch. This was accompanied by the assumption of the excavation management in Tell el-Dab'a ( Auaris ), one of the most important excavations in Egypt, in which Forstner-Müller has been participating since 1991 as a student. Since 2005 she has also been teaching at the University of Vienna. Forstner-Müller is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and a member of the Commission for Egypt and Levant of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .
