Irene McGugan (* 1952 in the Angus region ) is a Scottish politician and a member of the Scottish National Party (SNP). McGugan attended Forfar Academy and then studied at the Universities of Aberdeen and Dundee . She then worked as a social worker in India and the Tayside region . Prior to her election to the Scottish Parliament , McGugan was a member of the Angus Regional Council.

Political career

In the first Scottish general election in 1999, McGugan ran in the Aberdeen South constituency , but received only the fourth highest number of votes. Since McGugan was placed in fourth place on the regional electoral list of the SNP for the electoral region North East Scotland , she moved as one of seven representatives of the electoral region in the newly created Scottish Parliament as a result of the election result. In the shadow cabinet of First Minister John Swinney , McGugan was designated as Assistant Secretary of State for Education, Culture and Sports. In the following general election in 2003 McGugan ran for the direct mandate of the constituency of Dundee West and received the second largest share of the vote behind Kate Maclean of the Labor Party . Since she was only ranked seventh on the regional electoral list in these elections, she lost her mandate for the electoral region and resigned from parliament as a result of the election results.
