Irene of Thessaloniki († 304)

Irene von Thessaloniki (also Irenia ; * in the 3rd century in Aquileia , Italy, † 304 in Thessaloniki , Greece) was a martyr of early Christianity . Much is not known about the life of Irene. According to tradition, she suffered martyrdom in the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian .

She is to be distinguished from a martyr who was born in Thessaloniki and later persecuted under Licinus, who is also called Irene of Thessaloniki (also Irene of Constantinople ). The consecrated virgin Irene was the sister of the virgins Agape and Chione and was burned at the stake after being wounded with arrows.

The relics of Irenes came to Lecce in Apulia in the 13th century . It is considered the patron saint against lightning, fire, and comes with a palm branch, stake and arrow shown . Her feast day in the liturgy of the Catholic Church is April 1st, in the Orthodox Church April 5th, April 16th and December 22nd.
