IrfanView is a freeware - the program for viewing and on a small scale and for the processing of images of different formats for the operating system platform Microsoft Windows .

The name is derived from the first name of its developer Irfan Škiljan and the English word view ('display', 'view', 'look', 'point of view'). According to the developer, the software is downloaded more than a million times a month.

history

The program was first released in a preliminary version in 1995. The first stable final version of the program, version 1.70, which was published on June 1, 1996, was only available in English. Version 2.63 from January 25, 1998 was the first that was also available in German. Since then, Škiljan has been developing IrfanView in German and English. Since version 3.35 from 2001, each version is available in 29 languages. English is integrated, the 28 other languages can be downloaded as language packs.

According to the developer, IrfanView was the first image viewer for Windows that supported the GIF format including GIF animations and was able to load several sub-pages from ICO and TIFF files ("multipage" support).

Functions

The program can read a variety of free graphic formats - such as JPG , GIF , TIFF , PNG and ICO - and convert them to other formats. Through cooperations and separately available plug-ins , the program is expanded to include some additional functions and support for graphic formats such as WebP .

In addition to the actual image formats, other multimedia formats for video and music files are also supported, including MPEG , MP3 , Ogg and FLV . IrfanView offers basic image processing functions such as scanning, brightness, contrast, cropping, blurring , sharpening, negative, color change and special functions such as eliminating the red-eye effect or creating panorama images . Photoshop plug-ins can also be integrated using the 8BF filters that are included in the plug-in package . The program also includes a screen photo and copier function that creates a screenshot with the mouse pointer. In addition, you can create static HTML picture galleries with preview images ("thumbnail") from HTML templates ("template").

Many of the graphic manipulations offered can also be carried out as batch processing . In this way it is e.g. B. possible to rotate, reduce or rename several files in one step. The batch functionality can be controlled via the graphical user interface or via parameters in the command line.

The processing and display of IPTC-IIM standard information, which is useful for image archives, is implemented with an IPTC plug-in. With another plug-in, IrfanView can process JPEGs without loss .

The program can read, process and convert RAW files.

Plug-ins

There are plug-ins for IrfanView that offer the program additional functions. Most of the plug-ins installed by default exist in the form of DLL files, one as an EXE . The plug-ins to be installed afterwards are exe files, including one with an e-mail function. By default, IrfanView contains the plug-ins ANSI2UNICODE (for the support of Unicode ), Effects (picture effects), Icons , Paint (function for easy editing by drawing with the mouse), RegionCapture (simple screenshot function), Slideshow (for displaying pictures in presentation) and video (function for playing back video and audio files).
