Iridocorneal Endothelial Syndrome

The iridocorneal endothelial syndrome (ICE syndrome) is a group of very rare diseases of the cornea with progressive proliferation of the endothelium .

The clinical pictures differ in the extent of the atrophy of the iris and changes in the cornea .

The name was coined in 1979 by the American ophthalmologist Myron Yanoff.

distribution

The cause and frequency are not known, the disease usually occurs in women between the ages of 20 and 50.

Virus infections such as herpes simplex viruses or Epstein-Barr virus are discussed as the cause .

Clinical manifestations

Clinical criteria are:

  • Mostly one-sided
  • Holes, atrophy of the iris
  • Corneal edema
  • Deformation of the pupil
  • Synechiae

Frequent complications are secondary glaucoma up to 50%, possibly with neuropathy of the optic nerve and nodular formation of the iris.

Treatment is mainly directed against glaucoma and corneal dystrophy .
