The Irish Professional Championship 1981 was a snooker tournament to determine the Irish professional champion in the form of a challenge match. The tournament was played as part of the 1980/81 snooker season from 11 to 14 March 1981 in the Riverside Theater of the Northern Irish city of Coleraine between defending champion Dennis Taylor and his Irish challenger Patsy Fagan . Taylor only defended his title in the last possible frame of the game, in contrast to Fagan with a 107 break, the highest break of the tournament and at the same time the only century break .
background
The Northern Irishman Dennis Taylor had defeated the long-time title holder Alex Higgins , who had won a second championship in 1978 and 1979 against Patsy Fagan , after a failed attempt in 1978 in the previous year . For Taylor, this title win was next to the World Cup final in 1979, the greatest professional success, while his Irish competitor had won the first edition of the UK Championship .
Prize money
After there had been no prize money in the previous year, this time 2,800 pounds sterling were distributed.

final
Dennis Taylor got off to a better start with an 84 break and took the lead 3-0 and 4-1 before Patsy Fagan turned the game around to 4-6. After Taylor cut to 5-6, Fagan extended his lead to 5-8. Shortly thereafter, Taylor came up to 8: 9, until Fagan increased to 8:10. But Taylor managed to win the following two frames to 10:10, but Fagan immediately took the lead again and increased it to 11:14 after Taylor equalized again. After Taylor had won a frame again, Fagan moved to 12:17, with Taylor shortly thereafter reduced that score to 14:17 and 16:19. Fagan won another frame before Taylor turned the game around with a winning streak and took the lead with 21:20. Fagan still saved himself in the decider , which however went to Taylor with 73:27.
