features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 40 to 55 millimeters. There is no sexual dimorphism between the sexes . Both sexes have the same drawing elements. From the front edge six strong black gray stripes are on the front wing upper surface to the media vein or just below. In English usage, the species is therefore referred to as Six-bar Swordtail (six- bar swordtail). Another, wider and longer black-gray stripe runs along the submarginal region . The hem is also colored black-gray. At the black-colored anal corner of the hind wings with an orange-yellow spot there are long black tails. The drawing on the underside is similar to the upper side, but is somewhat paler in color and shows yellowish spots in the disk region .

Pre-imaginal stages

For animals originating from Kashmir , some information is available on the first stands: The adult caterpillars show short tubercles on the fourth and fifth segments as well as a clear thickening and they taper towards the end. There are two short tips on the anal segment. There are many small black dots on the back. The doll has a stretched shape, a light green color and shows four yellow stripes in the longitudinal direction. It has a strong, horn-like outgrowth on the back of the head and is attached to branches or leaves as a belt doll .

Similar species

  • The moths of Graphium antiphates differ in that only five black, very narrow stripes run on the upper side of the forewing , which is why they are referred to in English as Fife-bar Swordtail (five-line swordtail).
  • The general appearance of the moths of Graphium mandarinus is slightly paler and the dark stripe along the submarginal region is usually narrower than that of Graphium eurous . In addition, the pattern of spots on the underside of the hind wing is different.

distribution and habitat

The range of the species includes the north of India , Tibet , Thailand , Laos , Nepal , Bhutan as well as the southeast of China and Taiwan . Graphium eurous primarily inhabits deciduous forests at altitudes between 1000 and 2500 meters.

Way of life

Two butterflies suckling on moist soil

The moths fly mainly in the months of March to May. While the females visit flowers to take in nectar, the males suckle, sometimes in numbers on the ground at damp places in the earth, in order to take in liquids and minerals. To do this, they suck up liquid from the floor with their long suction trunks, from which they filter minerals. In doing so, they pump water through their bodies and expel the excess from the anus, which removes further minerals from the soil, which can then also be absorbed. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the laurel family (Lauraceae), for example Neolitsera variabillina , Neolitsea umbrosa , Persea odoratissima or Persea duthei .
