Irith Gabriely (born December 26, 1950 in Haifa ) is an Israeli clarinetist and singer , primarily of klezmer music .

Life

Irith Gabriely began to learn the clarinet when she was nine. At the age of 13 she won first prize and a scholarship with a clarinet concerto by Carl Maria von Weber at an Israeli youth music competition. Up until the age of 20, she won awards from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation for several years.

From 1968 to 1972 she studied clarinet, piano, conducting and philosophy at Tel Aviv University . During the 1973 Yom Kippur War , she appeared with two actors at different troop locations. She then traveled to Zurich with a friend , but without having a permanent commitment there. Only a position with the spa orchestra in Bad Salzuflen led her to Germany . There she also acquired her first German language skills (through driving license lessons and testing); she had always communicated in English before. This was followed by her further career as a solo clarinetist in the orchestra of the Darmstadt State Theater , in which she played the first clarinet from 1978 to 1995 via the Passau City Theater . In 1986 she founded the group Colalaila (clarinet, violin, accordion and electric bass), a klezmer ensemble with which she has since enjoyed success across Europe.

In 2004 the quartet transformed into Colalaila Classic , a more classic variant, with clarinet, violin, cello and piano. This ensemble can also look back on many concert successes in venues such as u. a. the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic , the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Mozart Hall of the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main and Die Glocke in Bremen.

Since 1990 she has also played with the composer and pianist Peter Przystaniak or with Martin Wagner (accordion) from classical to jazz to klezmer, additionally with the organist Hans-Joachim Dumeier in the project “Church meets Synagogue” and together with the Baghdad- born percussionist Riad Kheder in “Church, Synagogue and Mosque” - a musical trialogue between the three world religions.

Another project is the Darmstadt Chamber Symphony Orchestra. She founded this orchestra in 1983 and conducted it from 1983 to 2002. During this time Irith Gabriely also went on orchestral tours to Israel, Norway , Holland, Switzerland and Poland . In Poland she also conducted the Plóck Chamber Orchestra several times between 1991 and 1996.

A Klezmer meets Zigan project followed from 2002 to 2006 , together with the Sinti swing violinist Schnuckenack Reinhardt .

The composer Barbara Heller dedicated her Variations for Irith to Gabriely , which they performed on December 9, 1982 in Frankfurt am Main. Gabriely also arranged Heller's composition Dialogues for two clarinets.
