Iroquois Nationals is called the national team of the Iroquois in their national sport lacrosse . As the only association that does not represent a nation state , the Iroquois have been a full member of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) since 1987 . This makes them the only indigenous people in America who are eligible for international championships in a sport. Today the team is one of the most successful national teams alongside the United States, Canada and Australia. The women's team is part of the International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations .

history

The North American tribes played with different sticks (a -  Iroquois , b -  Passamaquoddy , c -  Chippewa , d -  Cherokee )

The game Lacrosse goes back to the North American indigenous people of the Five Nations or Six Nations of the Iroquois and is an important part of the Indian cultural tradition. According to tradition, the game was brought to the Iroquois as a divine gift and accordingly has a special spiritual meaning.

Lacrosse with the Iroquois today

Passport to the Iroquois Confederacy

For the first time in 1983, a national team was invited to play a friendly against the Canadian national team. As a result, the Iroquois made great efforts to win back their very own sport and to advertise the recognition of their sovereignty through international success. Lacrosse is of great symbolic importance for the Six Nations' self- image . It is no coincidence that the Grand Council of Chiefs , the chief assembly, is composed almost exclusively of former outstanding lacrosse players.

The Iroquois live today in the Canadian Ontario and on the northeast coast of the United States, members of the national teams therefore have different nationalities . When team trips abroad, however, the players use their own Iroquois Confederacy passports . The team thus plays an important role in the recognition of the First Nations as national units and is therefore officially supported by the Grand Council of Chiefs .

At the Lacrosse World Cup in Manchester in 2010, the national team failed to participate in the British customs authorities who refused entry to the Iroquois with their passport from the Iroquois Confederacy.

In 2015 the Iroquoi will host the Lacrosse Indoor World Championships in the two US cities of Buffalo and Syracuse .

successes

The Iroquois Nationals finished fourth at the Lacrosse World Championships in 1998 , 2002 and 2006 , and vice world champions at the two indoor world championships held so far in 2003, 2007 and 2011.

At the U-19 World Cup in 1999 and 2008, the Iroquois took third place.

Well-known Iroquois lacrosse players are Brett Bucktooth, Clay Hill, Darris Kilgour, Ken Montour, Craig Point, Delby Powless, Gaylord Powless, Neal Powless, Ross Powless and Michael Thompson, who are professional in Major League Lacrosse or indoor lacrosse in National Lacrosse League play. The midfielder Bucktooth was selected in a world selection at the 2006 tournament.
