Insanely human e. V. is an international non-profit organization in the field of mental health and a sponsor of free youth welfare . The association is based in Leipzig . Through several standardized programs, psychological crises in school, studies and training can be discussed, coping strategies are shown and information is provided about offers of help.

organization

Insanely human e. V. was founded on April 3, 2000 a. a. founded by Matthias Claus Angermeyer , then director of the chair for psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatics at the University of Leipzig and Manuela Richter-Werling, journalist. The aim of the association is to better understand mental crises and illnesses, to reduce stigmata , fears and prejudices , to convey knowledge , confidence and solutions and to promote well-being. Mental illnesses often begin in childhood and adolescence, but it often takes several years for those affected to seek and receive help. The biggest hurdle here is the fear of being stigmatized for mental illness. The stigma is one of the most serious barriers around the world preventing people from seeking early help despite increasingly better treatment options. The specific competence of Irrsinnig Menschlich eV consists in the development of low-threshold universal prevention programs and their supraregional implementation or scaling through the support of numerous partners in psychosocial care . The existing network comprises around 70 cooperation partners in Germany alone.

history

The starting point for the founding of the association were the results of the two population surveys in 1990 and 2000 on the subject of "Attitudes to mental illness and mentally ill people" by Matthias Claus Angermeyer. Psychiatrists, affected groups and relatives' initiatives around the world discussed how to reduce stigmata, prejudice and discrimination against people with mental health problems. Against this background, the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) started the worldwide movement "Open the doors" in 1999 with the aim of reducing stigmatization and discrimination against mentally ill people. 2001, made World Health Organization (WHO) for the first time mental health under the theme "Mental Health: Stop Exclusion - Dare to Care" on the theme of World Health Day . Behind this was the intention of the WHO to achieve a global change in policy and attitudes in dealing with mental illness . Against the background of the many people affected, the social impact and the high costs that mental illnesses cause, this is a global necessity: “Without mental health there is no health”.

The WHO European Ministerial Conference on Mental Health in Helsinki in January 2005 and The EU Green Paper 2006 “Improving the Mental Health of the Population - Developing a Strategy for Mental Health Promotion in the European Union” became the guiding principles for future health policy in the European Union. The prevention of mental illnesses and the promotion of the mental health of children, adolescents and young adults were declared to be a priority because the majority of all mental illnesses begin before the age of 24.

Since it was founded, Irrsinnig Menschlich has been doing pioneering work, especially with its prevention program “Crazy? So what! Mentally fit in school ”. The successful dissemination of the school program encouraged Irrsinnig Menschlich to develop, test and disseminate further offers for the university and company settings from 2016 onwards.

Programs

Insanely human e. V. works at the key point and the main obstacle to improving mental health, reducing stigma. The aim is in particular to raise awareness and reduce individual, public and structural discrimination . The combination of information, education and contact with members of the stigmatized group has been shown to be the most effective stigma reducing factor. That is why Irrsinnig Menschlich always intervenes with a tandem of specialist experts with appropriate professional qualifications and personal experts who have already experienced and overcome mental crises.

Prevention offers from Irrsinnig Menschlich:

  • “Learn to be mentally fit / crazy? So what! ”For schools
  • “Studying mentally fit” for universities
  • “Working mentally fit” for companies

The program “Crazy? So what! Mentally Fit in School ”is distributed in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia via social franchise . Cooperation partners at the local level are providers of community psychiatric psychosocial care , in particular clinics , health authorities and youth welfare offices . In 2018, Irrsinnig Menschlich reached over 23,000 young people, more than 3,000 teachers and other multipliers in schools, vocational schools, universities, organizations and companies with its offers in Germany . In Austria , the Czech Republic and Slovakia 6,000 participants benefited.

effect

The programs “Crazy? So what! ”And“ Study mentally fit ”have been evaluated several times by the Institute for Social Medicine, Occupational Medicine and Public Health (ISAP) at the University of Leipzig . They have a preventive, stigma-reducing and health-promoting effect. By lowering the barriers to access to the support and counseling system, monetary medical costs are also substantially reduced. The program “Crazy? So what! ”Was examined in a study by McKinsey & Company and Ashoka Germany with regard to its economic potential. The result: 80 million euros less follow-up costs for every percentage point of sick students who were “crazy?” In a class due to their participation in the school day. So what! ”In addition to early treatment.
