Irving Abella

Irving Martin Abella (born July 2, 1940 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian writer and historian . He specialized in the history of the Jews in Canada and the Canadian labor movement.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, he received a bachelor's degree in philosophy (1963), a master's degree (1964) and a doctorate (1969) from the University of Toronto .

His book titles are: Coat of Many Colors: Two Centuries of Jewish Life in Canada (1990) and None is Too Many: Canada and the Jews of Europe 1933–1948 (1983). He is a professor at York University and past President of the Canadian Jewish Congress (1992-1995).

In 1993 he became a member of the Order of Canada and the Royal Society of Canada . He is married to Rosalie Silberman Abella, a Canadian lawyer who was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004. They have two sons.
