Irving Oil is a Canadian company based in Saint John , New Brunswick . Its business areas include petroleum production and processing, natural gas production and processing, and petroleum distribution. It belongs to the Canadian conglomerate JD Irving .

history

Kenneth Colin (KC) Irving founded the company in 1924 at the age of 25. The first gas station was in Bouctouche , New Brunswick. In 1924, Iriving opened a Ford dealership in Saint John. The company expanded in the Atlantic provinces of Canada during the 1930s. 1940 to 1949 further expansions followed in Quebec and Newfoundland, and 1972 in Maine. In 1960, the Saint John refinery was built together with Standard Oil of California. In 1970, Saint John County opened the first deep-water port for petroleum in the Western Hemisphere. In 1977 the company began selling unleaded gasoline at its gas stations. In the late 1990s, the company became the first oil company in North America to introduce a new low-sulfur gasoline blend. In 2009 the deep-water port in Saint John was expanded to include a terminal for natural gas.

The company is one of the few companies in Canada and the United States that supports the Kyoto Protocol .

Business areas

Oil production and processing

The company operates Canada's largest oil refinery in Saint John with more than 300,000 barrels per day. The Whitegate refinery in Cork , Ireland was acquired by Phillips 66 in 2016 . Since then, Irving Oil has operated the only refinery in Ireland.

Petroleum distribution

The sales area are the Canadian Atlantic provinces, East Quebec and North New England with some 769 gas stations and shops. Irving maintains a fleet of tankers that have been painted a distinctive golden yellow since the 1970s. The cab and trailer have been painted white since the 2000s. These tankers are used to supply the company's own gas station network in the region via a network of fuel depots. Irving Oil also operates a fleet of ocean tankers . The most important cooperation partner is TransCanada , through whose pipelines the crude oil is transported.
