The Whitegate Refinery is the only Irish refinery in Cork , County Cork . It has been operated by Irving Oil since 2016 .

history

A consortium in which Esso (40%), Shell-Mex and BP (40%) and Caltex (20%) were involved began planning the refinery in August 1956. Construction of the refinery began in August 1957, so that the refinery could go into operation in April 1959. In the early 1980s, margins were extremely poor, so the consortium planned to close the refinery. In March 1982, the state-owned Irish National Petroleum Company took over the Whitegate refinery to prevent closure. In 2001 the refinery and Whiddy Island Terminal were sold by the Irish National Petroleum Company to Tosco Corporation for $ 100 million. Tosco merged with Phillips Petroleum Company in 2001 , and in 2002 the new company merged with Conoco to become ConocoPhillips . In 2007 the refinery was offered for sale, as no interested party could be found, the refinery initially remained with ConocoPhillips.

On May 1, 2012, the refinery with the downstream segment was spun off from ConocaPhillips and incorporated into Phillips 66 . The sale to Irving Oil took place in the fall of 2016.
