Irwin Cotler OC (born May 8, 1940 in Montreal , Québec ) is a Canadian politician of the Liberal Party of Canada .

Life

Cotler studied law at McGill University and Yale University . After graduating, he worked as a lawyer and in 1973 was employed as a professor of law at McGill University. He became a member of the Liberal Party of Canada . In 1999 he succeeded Port Royal as a member of the Canadian House of Commons. As the successor to Martin Cauchon , Cotler was Minister of Justice of Canada from 2003 to 2006 in the government cabinet of Paul Martin . Cotler is married to Ariela Cotler. Today he is a committee member of the pro-Israel lobby organization UN Watch .

As a result of the Crimean crisis, Cotler was banned from entering Russia by the Russian government. He had already been expelled from the Soviet Union in 1979 when he was working there as a lawyer for Natan Sharanski and other imprisoned dissidents .

In 2019 he took over the mandate for the German Jens Soering, who had been imprisoned in the USA since 1990 .
