Isaac Lipschits (born November 19, 1930 in Rotterdam , † May 24, 2008 in Groningen ) was a Dutch historian, political scientist and Holocaust survivor .

Live and act

Isaac Lipschits was born in Rotterdam in 1930 and grew up there. From 1942 onwards, his parents made him hide himself and his younger brother. In this way, both children managed to survive the persecution of the Jews and the Second World War , while the rest of the family was deported to Eastern Europe and killed.

After the Second World War, Lipschits became professor of contemporary history and political science and taught at various universities in the Netherlands and Israel.

One of his main concerns throughout his life was to remember the persecution and murder of European Jews. His book Onbestelbaar (Undeliverable) , published in 1992, contains a letter to his mother in which he tells of the fate that befell him and his family. In this work, Lipschits took the persecution of the Jews seriously.

After his retirement he devoted much of his time to commemorating the Dutch victims of the Holocaust. He succeeded in this in an impressive way as the originator of the project digital monument of the Jewish community in the Netherlands , in which he was also significantly involved: A large number of the biographies contained there go back to his own historical research.

Lipschits became known as the first translator of the often reprinted complete first part of Marx ' Capital in Dutch (anniversary year 1967).
