from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Isaac Margolis ( Jiṣḥaq Margoliôt ) (* 1842 in Kalvarija (Kalvariya), † August 1, 1887 in New York City ) was a Russian-Polish rabbi and author.

The son of the rabbi of Wiżajny is a descendant of Jomtow Lipmann Heller and devoted his youth to studying the Talmud. In 1862 he settled in Merkinė ( Meretz at the time ), where his son Max Leopold Margolis was born in 1866 . He may have been married to Hinde Bernstein, the daughter of Mordechai Bernstein and Kaila Margolis. Since he soon didn't like it here anymore, he moved to Kaunas ( Kovno ), where he soon found a job as a tutor in the house of Esekiel Jaffe (Esekiel Moses Jaffe). He later became the Rabbi of Druskininkai . In 1884 he emigrated to the USA and became rabbi of the Anshe-Kalvariya Congregation in New York.
