Isaak Jakowlewitsch Masel

Isaak Jakowlewitsch Masel ( Russian Исаак Яковлевич Мазель ; * 1911 in Minsk , † March 31, 1945 in Tashkent ) was a Soviet chess master .

Life

Masel achieved his first chess successes in Belarus at the end of the 1920s . Then he moved to Moscow . During the Second World War he was stationed as a lieutenant in the Red Army in Tashkent and lived there with Olga Rubzowa .

Isaak Masel was a relative of the Czech chess composer Eduard Mazel (* December 24, 1859, † December 27, 1943).

Chess player

In 1931 he finished 8-9 in the 7th USSR Championship with 9 out of 17. In the same year he became a master of sports . In 1934 he won a match against Hans Kmoch 2½ to 1½. At the 9th USSR Championship in Leningrad in 1934/35 , he finished 15-16 with 8½ out of 19. In 1941/42 he became the master of Moscow, after having finished 2nd – 3rd in 1933/34 had become.

His highest historical rating was 2531 in June 1938, making him 78th in the world rankings.
