Isaak Kann (* 1638 ; † 1701 in Frankfurt am Main ) was an Israelite merchant and banker.

Life

Isaak Kann, who was probably born in 1638, came from one of the richest and most important families in Frankfurt. His ancestor Samuel zur Krone , who is considered the progenitor of the name Kann, was considered the richest Jew in Frankfurt at the time before his death in 1578. The family was called "Kann" after they had bought the house (Weisse) Kanne in Frankfurt's Judengasse . Isaac Kann is said to have great ambition and will to power. He increased the fortune through various commercial transactions, in particular with jewels, as well as various loan and exchange transactions . In 1681, his splendid lifestyle led to the fact that his daughter's wedding celebrations aroused the displeasure of the City Council of Frankfurt. His rivalries with Abraham Drach , which became part of the history of the city of Frankfurt as Drach-Kannsche chaos , have been handed down. Although Kann was defeated by his opponent in a 1686 trial and sentenced to 100,000 Reichstalers , he remained one of the richest and most respected Frankfurt Jews. He died in 1701. His descendants continued to do banking under various company names until the middle of the 19th century, without any of them being as successful and respected as Isaac was in his day.
