Isaev is an impact crater on the back of the moon and therefore can not be directly observed from Earth . It is located in the northwest area within the Gagarin crater , from which it is completely enclosed. The northwest outer edge of Isaev touches the inner wall of Gagarin.
Although Isaev is younger than Gagarin, he still shows strong signs of erosion. The southern rim of the crater is broken through by the smaller satellite crater 'Isaev N'. The entire rim of the crater and the inner walls are pitted by small craters. A short chain of such craters forms a furrow along the western inner wall. The crater floor has a large trilobal patch made of material with a low albedo . These dark spots on the moon are typically caused by basaltic lava flows .
