Isham Warren Garrott (* 1816 in Anson County , North Carolina , † June 17, 1863 in Vicksburg , Mississippi ) was an American politician, businessman and brigadier general of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War .

Life

After graduating from high school, Garrott studied law at the University of North Carolina , was a prosecutor in Marion , Alabama in 1840 and was active in politics, where he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1845 and 1847 . In the following years he became a co-owner of the Marion and Alabama River Transportation Company and president of Howard College in Marion.

Civil War

When the civil war broke out, he assembled the 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment at his own expense, and he was appointed colonel . After the Battle of Port Gibson (Mississippi) he took over the place of the fallen General Edward Dorr Tracy as Brigadier General and was ordered with his troops to defend Vicksburg. During the siege of Vicksburg , which lasted from May 18 to July 4, 1863 , Garrott was shot dead by a sniper from the Union Army on June 17, 1863 .

It was in honor of Fort Garrott near Vicksburg named.
