Iskender Gider

Iskender Gider (* 1957 in Istanbul , Turkey ) is a Turkish-German artist who has made a name for himself primarily as a picture book author and children's book illustrator .

Life

Gider came to Cologne with his family in 1965 as a child . The now freelance artist studied graphic design at the Folkwang School in Essen . In 1983 he received a teaching position at the University of Essen . In the meantime he was also the art director of an advertising agency.

Today Gider lives in Recklinghausen.

Artistic work

In 1988 Gider's first book illustration was created for a Salzburg publisher as well as his first own picture book Oh, Ostern (co-author: Max Kerner). Further independent children's picture books Giders followed with We are waiting for Santa Claus (1992), Oh you happy (1993), Jochen der Schweinfant (1998) and Sleep well, Emily! (2000). The artist illustrated books by the children's author Ursel Scheffler particularly frequently , including the well-known Hasenfranz series (from 1994). In addition, Gider u. a. the pictures for books such as the 1994 special edition of The Big Colorful Folk & Children's Songbook by Tosa Verlag.

Quite a few of the picture books he illustrated appeared in other languages. So far, they have often dealt with outsider topics ( The Black Chicken , 1995), which Gider himself attributes to his biography as a child of immigrants from Turkey, but also Christian festivals such as Easter and Christmas.

As a visual artist, in addition to his pictures and picture books, Gider has also made a name for himself regionally with stork sculptures - art made from scrap.
