The Isla Contoy is a small island off the coast of Yucatan in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo . It is located about 30 km north of Isla Mujeres between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico . It extends over an area of ​​only 3.17 square kilometers with a length of 8.5 km.

The island is uninhabited due to the lack of fresh water and is home to more than 150 different species of birds, among others. a. Pelicans , frigate birds and cormorants . The Isla Contoy is a breeding ground for sea turtles and flamingos there are equally at home exotic fish species off the coast.

Isla Contoy has been protected by the Mexican government since 1961 and was declared a national park in February 1998 .

Only supervised ecotourism is allowed and only 200 guests are allowed to visit Isla Contoy daily . Day trips take place from Puerto Juárez north of Cancun or Isla Mujeres.
