Islam Democrats

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Islam Democrats (ID, Islam Democrats ) are a Dutch party .

history

The ID started as a local party in The Hague (it has been represented there with two seats on the city council since 2014) and later competed nationwide in the parliamentary elections of 2006 in four constituencies, but could not win with 4,339 votes (0.0%) move in Dutch House of Commons . One of the party's co-founders and top candidate for the general election was Arif Potmis, who is from Aruba and was originally a Catholic before converting to Islam .

Despite its rather marginal importance, the ID caused quite a stir. After Marco Pastors, the EénNL party's top candidate for the parliamentary elections in 2006, accused in an election campaign on the radio that the threat of Islamization in the Netherlands was just as unlikely as the rise of the Nazis in the 1930s, the ID saw one Denigration and attempted to obtain an injunction against it, but failed in court.

In 2007 the ID protested against a photograph by the Iranian artist Sooreh Hera in the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, which shows two homosexual men with masks of Mohammed and his son-in-law Ali . The director of the Gemeentemuseum then had the photograph removed because he saw it as a potential violation of religious feelings. Previously there had been threats against the museum and the artist, from which the party distanced itself. The Gouda- based MuseumgoudA then offered to exhibit the incriminated photograph.

The party caused a sensation, among other things, by the fact that photos of Dilaver Delikaya's nephews appeared on the Internet, showing them with weapons and in positions of violence and the Kaaba and Islamic pictures on the wall in the background. The Dutch media rated this in such a way that the party may secretly pursue Islamic extremist goals, but is democratic and tolerant to the public. Later it turns out that the guns in the photos are not real ones, but toy guns.

Party platform

The ID want to counter views that Islam and democracy are incompatible and speak out against extremism. The program focuses almost entirely on a multicultural coexistence in which integration and tolerance are promoted, while discrimination is combated. The party is in favor of direct elections for mayors.
