The Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan ( Tajik Ҳизби наҳзати исломии Тоҷикистон Hisbi nahsati islomii Todschikiston ; Russian Партия исламского возрождения Таджикистана Partija islamskowo wosroschdenija Tadschikistana ), also known as Islamic Revival of Tajikistan , Islamic Revival of Tajikistan , Islamic Party of Revival and Islamic Rebirth Party was an Islamist party in Tajikistan . Until it was banned, it was the only legal Islamist party in post-Soviet Central Asia .

history

The organization was founded in 1990. In 1992 the party held a conference in Saratov , Russia , which was attended by many Islamists from the former Asian Union Republics and the Tatarstan and Bashkortostan regions .

When Tajikistan gained independence, the party was banned in 1993 and fought alongside the United Tajik Opposition (VTO) and associations from the Gharm region against the regime (see Tajik Civil War ). In 1998 the party was legalized again after complying with a number of peacekeeping requirements. In a referendum in 1999, the majority of the Tajik population voted for the legalization of religious parties. In the same year, the Islamic Party of the Rebirth of Tajikistan rose to become the second largest party in the country.

In the parliamentary elections in Tajikistan in 2005 , which took place between February 27 and March 13, 2005, the party received 8% and won 2 out of 63 seats in the Tajik parliament .

In the elections on February 28, 2010, the party also received 8% and thus 2 of the 63 seats.

In 2006 the long-time leader of the party, Sajid Abdullohi Nuri , died of complications from cancer , after which the organization tried to boycott the presidential elections.

The party was banned in 2015.

In 2018, Interior Minister Ramason Rahimov assigned the party, which operates underground, the blame for a terrorist attack on a group of foreign tourists, also claimed by IS , which the party's leadership in exile rejected.
