The Isolator Museum in Lohr am Main shows a large part of Lothar Vormwald's private isolator collection and was opened on June 20, 2004 as the third museum in the Lower Franconian city. It is the only one of its kind in Germany.

collection

The private collection that the trained high-voltage electrician built up with the help of his wife Daniele Vormwald includes more than 600 insulators from over 40 countries. The different sizes and designs of insulators as well as their historical development are shown. The smallest insulators in the collection come from telecommunications lines and are no larger than a thimble , the largest exhibit is a three-part insulator chain on a 380 kV high-voltage line with a length of over 3 m and a mass of 150 kg.

The dates of manufacture range from the turn of the century to the present day, most of them date from 1919 and are as old as the building. The company logo and year of construction can still be seen on many .

The museum is opened upon registration.

Museum building

The museum is located on two floors with an area of 2.5 mx 2.5 m in a decommissioned tower station in Haaggasse and claims the title of “Germany's smallest museum”.

The tower-like quarry stone building with a pyramid roof and weather vane from 1920 has been entered in Lohr's list of monuments since summer 2000 under the file number D-6-77-155-2 . In 2001 the city administration decided to demolish the building because of the lack of stability, but met resistance from the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . In the following years the building was refurbished and renovated with the help of many donations in money and in kind as well as the personal commitment of the collector and museum director.
