The cactus catfish ( Pseudacanthicus ( lat . "Pseudo" = false + Acanthicus )) form a genus in the family of South American armored catfish , which includes current seven species and the Amazon basin and Guiana occurs.
features
Cactus catfish are between 15 ( Pseudacanthicus leopardus ) and 90 cm ( Pseudacanthicus histrix ) long and have the squat and flattened physique typical of ancistrine armor catfish. Characteristic of the genus and the reason for the German name are the strong, thorny skin ossifications, further features are the large number of small bone shields in the nuchal region ("neck") and the upper jaw, which is short compared to the lower jaw, whose teeth form an undivided row.
