Israel Gottlieb Wernicke (born February 2, 1755 in Bergen , Norway ; † March 3, 1836 in Jordrup near Kolding , Denmark ) was a Danish-Norwegian composer and harpsichordist .

Life

Wernicke, who was a student of Johann Philipp Kirnberger , worked primarily in Copenhagen , where he was court and opera conductor at the royal theater from 1781 to 1786 . He later moved to Kolding and worked here as a teacher and highly respected music theorist . He wrote mainly canons and piano works, u. a. a large-scale work of variations : Arietta con 50 variazioni per il clavicembalo . Many of his works were destroyed by the fire at Christiansborg Palace in 1794 .

The special importance of Wernicke lies in the fact that he stood in the authentic Bach tradition and was thus able to arouse the interest of many Danish and Norwegian musicians in Bach.
