Israel Julius Elkan
Israel Julius Elkan (born April 21, 1777 - † July 28, 1839 in Weimar ) was a German banker .
Israel Julius Elkan was the son of the merchant and court factor Jacob Elkan (1742-1805). From 1800 he worked in the banking business that he had taken over from his father. The writer and later publisher Moritz Veit , who in turn was related to Elkan's wife (née Borchardt) from Berlin , frequented his home . Veit married Johanna, a daughter of Elkan, in 1834. On October 30, 1833, he was appointed Grand Ducal Saxon-Weimar court banker. One of his most important customers was probably the poet Friedrich Schiller . It can be assumed that Schiller managed his business with regard to his Weimar house through Elkan. Even Goethe had business a lot to do with it. Elkan was thus the most important banker in Weimar classical music . The Elkan bank existed until 1905 when it was taken over by the Magdeburg private bank . This was located at Windischenstraße 25, which has been preserved. The initials JE can be seen above the entrance door . He was buried in the Jewish cemetery (Weimar) .
