The Istana Negara ("National Palace "), also Istana Negara Jalan Istana , in Kuala Lumpur was from 1957 to 2011 the official residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia . It has housed the Royal Museum since 2013 and is known as the Alter Istana Negara .
The building was constructed in 1928 as the residence of the millionaire Chan Wing . It was used by the Japanese occupation forces between 1942 and 1945 . After the Japanese withdrew, the State of Selangor acquired the palace and made it the residence of its sultan . In 1957, the year of Malaysia's independence, it became the property of the federal government and became the national palace.
