Istros (river god)
Istros ( Greek Ἴστρος ) is in Greek mythology a son of the Titaness and sea goddess Tethys and her husband (and brother) Oceanus .
Istros is the god and personification of the river Ister (Latin Hister), a name that was common in ancient times for the lower course of the Danube . His sons were Helorus and Aktaios , who fought against Achilles and the Greeks in Mysia as allies of Telephos and thus the Trojans .
Istros is not only depicted on coins from the city of the same name - here mostly bearded and with a horned head - but also frequently on coins from Nicopolis ad Istrum . On the Trajan Column he is shown emerging from the floods in a grotto and wreathed with aquatic plants, as he turns to the Roman bridge building .
